Session Description: The US continues to see high peripartum mortality rates and emergency physicians frequently care for postpartum people in the critical "4th trimester." EPs across a variety of practice settings need to be prepare to diagnose and treat neurologic and cardiovascular emergencies in this population. The session will review best practices for the management of can't miss postpartum emergencies, including peripartum cardiomyopathy, preeclampsia/eclampsia, headaches, HELLP and postpartum depression.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the pitfalls to diagnosing postpartum preeclampsia/eclampsia and cardiomyopathy and implement evidence based guidelines for the management of this lethal disease.
List serious etiologies of headache in the peripartum period and the recommended imaging modalities of choice for their diagnosis.
Adapt screening tools for postpartum depression into their daily EM practice.
