Session Description: Patients with hepatic cirrhosis live on the edge in terms of managing their chronic illness. Seemingly at any moment, the somewhat stable chronically ill patient can decompensate acutely, affecting multiple body systems and cause an acute life threat. In this session we will review the pathophysiology of decompensated cirrhosis, including how it affects the balance of almost all other systems, and come up with strategies to effectively take care of our next cirrhotic patient.
Learning Objectives:
Review the pathophysiology of hepatic cirrhosis
Understand the balance between multiple physiologic systems and how acute decompensated cirrhosis can have profound effects throughout the body
Construct a resuscitative strategy to manage the crashing cirrhotic patient
