Session Description: Ever walk into a room with a patient with a severe intellectual or developmental disability and feel like you don't know where to start? That's normal! Most physicians have received little to no direct instruction as to how they should best approach these patients to provide high quality care. This session will use a case based approach to identify common pitfalls in Emergency Medicine that negatively impact adults with IDD and then provide concrete solutions. We will identify broad structural problems but also make suggestions as to small, immediate actions that can lead to incremental change that improves patient experiences and outcomes. We will also discuss how to adjust our normal workflow to best accommodate this often neglected patient population.
Learning Objectives:
Identify sources of health disparities and negative experiences in the Emergency Department amongst patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Develop a series of interventions to improve patients with IDD's experience of their home Emergency Department.
Confidently interact in a respectful and efficacious manner with patients with IDD and their supporters.
